Hotel Photography in Prague: The Julius and Marriott Courtyard

International clients from Prague

We traveled to Prague for five days, where we photographed two hotels. The Julius, a five-star, modern, and minimalist hotel, and the Marriott Courtyard,  the classic style of Marriott. To photograph interior images for Marriott hotels, we need to be approved photographers by Marriott. To the best of my knowledge, we received this approval, so we can now officially photograph for Marriott.

We arrived in Prague on Tuesday evening. We had originally planned to go on Wednesday, but since our client booked accommodation for us, we realized on Tuesday morning that the reservation was already made for that day as well. I asked Patrik, "Why don’t we head out a day earlier?" So we decided to leave on Tuesday evening and arrived in Prague at around 1:30 AM.

Early start: photographing the breakfast selection

The next day, Wednesday, was our scouting day. We went through the spaces to be photographed and planned the shoot for the following day. Afterward, we had the entire day free, so we explored the city. On Thursday, we woke up early. The first breakfast guests could arrive at 6:30 AM, and we needed to photograph the breakfast selection along with the restaurant. By 5:45 AM, our first composition was already set up. This part is always stressful since we are working within a tight time frame. But we managed to pull it off.

Next, we moved on to the gym, right as people were finishing their morning workouts. It took a lot of rearranging to make the space look somewhat organized, but a gym will never appear perfectly tidy and minimalist in photos due to all the equipment, which is simply part of its nature. The gym had been recently renovated, which is why new photos were needed.

Photographing the hotel rooms

We also needed to take some new room photos, but we avoided using a wide-angle lens as it would have included too much of the ceiling in the shots. Instead, we picked up the 24mm focal length. Since it was November and dark outside, we relied heavily on flash and long exposures with the lights off to make the naturally bright room appear well-lit, as it would on a sunny day. After lunch, we returned to take more photos of the restaurant, which had a few newly renovated sections. Since it started getting dark by 4 PM, we could not take any more photos, but we had planned for this limitation.

Second day: The Julius Hotel

The next day, we started at The Julius Hotel, which turned into a full day of shooting. We photographed two rooms and the restaurant. One was a suite, and the other was a standard room. We finished the standard room fairly quickly, but the large spaces in the suites are time-consuming because everything needs to be carefully arranged and perfectly set. This is exactly why Patrik and I work as a team, if I were doing this alone, I would never get it all done in time.

In the evening, we moved on to the restaurant, capturing one wide shot and two detail shots. We timed it just before dinner to avoid disturbing the guests. While we used plenty of flashes, we made sure not to disrupt the ambiance of the restaurant, instead enhancing the existing light sources. Sometimes, less is more.

Two days off after the photoshooting

After that, we had the entire weekend free. We planned it this way to explore the city as much as possible within those two days. We were lucky with the weather, 10 degrees and sunny. We visited local spots where we hardly heard any English being spoken. We even jumped into the nightlife, but of course, in a refined manner, as two sophisticated and professional photographers would. Going forward, we will continue to add a few extra days to our international assignments whenever possible, after all, if we are already there, why not make the most of it?

On Sunday, before heading back, we returned to take some exterior shots since the weather had not allowed it on Thursday. We already have two international shoots planned for December and January, so I’ll likely share updates from those next time.
